"Apology to Stolen Generations"

On February 13th, 2008, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered the official "Apology to the Stolen Generations" during the first session of the 2008 Federal Parliament.  Rudd invited members of the Stolen Generations to the session to hear the formal apology, which was nationally televised.  The speech marked a significant turning-point for Indigenous Australians, and resulted in major implications for the future of these individuals in Australian higher education.


Indigenous Student Services at Universities in New South Wales

Almost all universities in Australia have some type of Indigenous student services office located on campus.  In New South Wales, such programs service this population by providing: 
  • Academic support programs known as Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Schemes
  • Alternative entry programs
  • Access to computer labs, meeting space, travel/housing assistance, and financial aid
  • Research opportunities
Nura Gili Indigenous Center

At Sydney's University of New South Wales, the Nura Gili Indigenous Programs Center is considered a national leader in Indigenous education.  Nura Gili "encourages self-empowerment within an inspiring and supportive community that celebrates learning, diversity, and the achievement of social justice" (University of New South Wales, 2011).
